ralphemorgan It is a radiation detector, so it will tell you if there's increased radiation where you are, but these sorts of gamma radiation detectors are not directional. So you are only measuring the radiation level where the device is - you would not know how far away a radiation source was or which way to go to avoid it. You would simply monitor the readings and try to go in a direction where the reading is going down rather than up (not that simple of there is an ongoing release of radioactive material eg. a reactor accident, as the radiation rate may be increasing, so it may not be obvious that you are heading the correct direction just by looking at the readings). Generally you would know the likely source of radiation is, and head away from it.
